were going bad, it wouldn't be fluctuating so quickly because the thermostat controls the temperature the cooling system should be at, but does so by diverting water to the radiator, so it takes a lot of time for the temperature to change. I think that 2 more likely causes would be... 1) Air pockets in the water... especially since there seems to be a leak somewhere. When the air pocket hits the temperature sensor, it screws up the reading. I had this happen when I was running low on fluid... any time I went up a slight incline, my gauge would start climbing, and when I was going on a level or slight decline, it would drop. or 2) Coolant temperature sensor has corrosion on the connector or has gone bad.
